THE POWER OF “BUDDHA”
Don’t worry about whether or not the dead person knows anything about the Buddha or Buddhism. Since their perceptions are no longer filtered, a person is one hundred times more aware when they are dead than when they were alive. And it is precisely because the dead are more aware that it is so important for the living to encourage them to take refuge and introduce them to the bardo teachings.
The idea of “buddha” is extremely profound. When you tell a bardo being about buddha, you are introducing them to the idea that the Buddha is the nature of their mind. In many ways, the timing is perfect, because bardo beings are closer to the nature of mind than any other sentient being.
